Dear Readers,

Aside from the great fiction, nonfiction, and poetry we get to promote, Paradigm has afforded us the opportunity to speak with artists who’ve inspired and affected us personally. Over the past three years, we’ve had the good fortune to interview a wide range of artists about their work: musicians, chefs, novelists, screenwriters, golf course architects. Even crop-circle designers.

Every time, I’ve been as surprised and excited by our subjects' answers as I am honored by their willingness to participate. The More Issue is the perfect example of this. For this, our twelfth issue, we feature interviews with four very different artists: Newbery Award winner Lois Lowry, whose The Giver and Number the Stars are among some of the most beloved books in American literature; celebrity bartender and Iron Chef America emcee Kevin Brauch; Hollywood makeup artist Randy Westgate (Fight Club); and veteran film composer Mychael Danna (500 Days of Summer, The Ice Storm).

And while we pride ourselves in putting together artists who wouldn't ordinarily "belong" together, it's enlightening to see the common bond between Lowry, Brauch, Westgate and Danna: the love of storytelling. Be it through words on a page or the delicate marriage of flavors, the design of a prosthetic or sweeping notes recorded on a soundstage, these artists all tell stories in their own ways. They not only say a great deal about themselves but, when put together, they strike a chord that says volumes about the human experience.

Enjoy!

Best,
Paul Fuhr
